It is our pleasure to present this letter of introduction for the Alvamar Neighborhood Association.  This is a voluntary organization formed to advocate for all of west Lawrence and specifically the area bounded by Kasold Drive, Bob Billings Parkway, Wakarusa Drive, and Clinton Parkway.  If you live in west Lawrence, you are important to our purpose and automatically a member.  If you live in the more specific area described above and would like to be a Founding Member, we are seeking annual dues of $10 per year to support administrative expenses such as printing and mailing flyers, website costs, and possible ads in local publications, to name a few.  Please note, whatever your status, we would like your name, address, and email address.  Please click "Join Us" here or on the left and fill out the short form. This information is for the sole purpose of keeping the membership informed of matters of interest and will be respected for privacy in all other matters.

Purpose and Goals

The Alvamar Neighborhood Association is not a homeowners’ association that deals with covenants; it is simply an organization of individuals who are committed to maintaining the character, beauty, and attractiveness of our neighborhood through advocacy.

News and Key Issues

August 2024: In an effort to prevent further development, the ANA has put forth a petition. Please click the link below to sign the petition. Thank you!

August 2024: The Alvamar Neighborhood Association sent a video to all City Commissioners showing the intent to protect the Alvamar golf course and neighborhood when it underwent an ownership change in 2016. Click here to watch the video

April 2024 Proposed Zoning Changes: There is a pending revision of the Lawrence Land Development Code that would dramatically reduce the planned lot sizes and increase the types of housing allowed. The proposed Code which is intended to maximize infill would cover all of Alvamar, including The Jayhawk Club’s Championship 18-hole and Alvamar 9 courses. Under these proposed changes, any developer would be encouraged to start placing smaller homes, duplexes, and apartments on any green spaces in our neighborhood, including on the courses themselves. Interestingly, Bob Billings Alvamar golf courses were never zoned to prohibit development at Alvamar. There were simple common sense issues that prevented such development. The proposed Code changes would substantially promote mixed-use development by reducing minimum restrictions on lot size, set-back, etc. The potential loss of the green spaces existing in the area represented by the Alvamar Neighborhood Association would be a tragedy for not only the Alvamar neighborhood, but for the City of Lawrence. It is well known that the beauty of Alvamar is what attracted so many people to Lawrence who otherwise would have chosen to live elsewhere. While we appreciate and support diversity of neighborhoods, the planned changes to the Code would have just the opposite effect in leading to the potential elimination of one of the unique features of our City. While we support the need for affordable housing for all in Lawrence, potential destruction of the character and beauty of the Alvamar neighborhood is not an appropriate means to support that goal. There are many other options available to develop the necessary housing stock. We urge residents to review the draft Code at this link; https://lawrenceldc.konveio.com/ and send letters of concern to the Planning Commission, and the City Commission. Concerted action and advocacy by all of us will be critical to preserving the unique beauty and attractiveness of Alvamar and our City. We strongly encourage you to become a member of the Alvamar Neighborhood Association and express your views. Concerted action and advocacy by all of us will be critical to preserving the unique beauty and attractiveness of Alvamar and our City.
